English and bad teeth
No this is not a blog about how horrible the teeth of english people are. In fact it's just the opposite! I'm gonna whinge and whine about how the yanks/american's go on about English people's teeth. I was watching an american comedy show.... let's be blunt, MADTV, must be an older episode, since I live currently in Scandinavia and very much doubt they get American TV straight of the presses so to speak. Anyway, there was an entire sketch about the "BBC", filled with all the hilariously funny american comedian taking the... *cough*... michael, each everyone dressed as up as older people with white to greying hair, with boils, bad teeth and funny "terribly posh" british accents. At the moment I seem to feeling particularly patriotic, although I'm a TOTAL ex-pat (i.e. I slag off without mercy my own country) and I feel that it's my right as a person who is British and doesn't live there to be able to complain about it. However, I'm seriously getting sick of the idea that ALL brits have horrible teeth and lardydar accents, either that or they're cockney's. Okay, so yes we do have people with lovely speaking voices and yes in London some people actually do have Cockney accents, but to surmise that the entire british isle's is composed of those accents is like saying that the USA is filled with either New Yorkers or Hill Billies. I know for a certainty that the USA has imported stuff like "Little Britain" which just goes to show that english people, though don't have laser white smiles, do have acceptably good teeth and don't all have cockney or Queen's English accents, so why can't american comedians take a hint? Why they have to take the....*cough*... michael out of the country that gave them their language anyway? Haven't they got enough material in their own? I mean Britain is a TINY country in comparison and you never see british comedians taking the... *cough*... michael out of the USA! We always pick on ourselves first and then the rest of the colonies before we'd even think about messing with the USA. And with such large military force who's gonna want to....*cough*... make them angry in the first place. No the british on the whole do not have teeth you could use to make morse code with, but we're not peasants from the 17th century, we actually do own toothbrushes and whitening toothpaste, amazingly! Are the yanks so caught up with superficiality that they can't cope with naturally white looking teeth instead of teeth you could check the whiteness of paper with? Heck, if I wanted to I could take the...*cough*... michael about that, eg: "hey, can she close her mouth, we can't see the runway!" It's not like the American's are so great that we have no ammunition. Or is it that America is so unaccepting of anyone but themselves that comedians have to take the...*cough*... michael so that the rest of the world become socially acceptable to them? I mean it's the fastest route to making something social acceptable, make fun of it and suddenly it's not threatening, then it slowly becomes okay.
Are american's threatened by the british because of the age of the country? Does Great Britain intimidate America, like your Great Aunt with the perfect handwriting and glasses that perch on her nose? What is it? All I ask is that American Comedians get more imaginative, don't just put on a wig, dentures and speak with a funny accent, it's degrading to everyone and especially to those that are doing it. It makes you look uncreative and unintelligent when you go for an easy laugh. All I ask is you don't go for the stereotype! Well I'm done ranting! Over and Out
