Food - In All Its Simple Elegance
I have to confess food is both a passion and an obsession for me. Which probably explains my ever increasing waistline and my constant attempts at a healthy, sustainable, low fat lifestyle! I'm not a food writer, although I could probably be a food critic and no doubt my waistline would expand. Well, the post this week comes from a vision and an understanding that flashed at me whilst I was enjoying a thick slice of bread and butter. I love carbohydrates; bread, pasta, rice and potatoes are my comfort foods. They are a source of simple pleasure. I have always believed that food, good food should be easy, simple and elegant. Having said that some of the recipes that I consider simple and easy would probably make some of my friends weak and queasy at the thought of such an intricate dish. Perhaps its not the difficulty or simplicity of a dish, but the experience and passion of the cook/chef. Anyway, that is beside the point I was trying to make. A thick slice of bread and butter brought me these contemplations, whilst sitting in a sun lit kitchen and I was reminded of the simple pleasures in life. The hot cup of coffee, the slice of fresh bread and butter, these simple delicacies never tire me. They are old friends, pleasant companions and soulful comforters. Perhaps its the love of food, the passion of flavours that makes these things so dear to me. That and the memories, the moments of reminiscence that are conjured when I eat them. My relationship with food may be considered an unhealthy one, which explains why I, with little to know effort on my part, can fatten up my friends. My lust for food, my passion is infectious and I contaminate all my friends; girlfriends who are healthy, active and on the whole not addicted to sugar arrive at my flat craving lavish amounts of calorie laden feasts and sugarfilled delights. Food, when created with love, passion for flavour and a knowledge of combinations is always a joy, and brings delight to almost everyone. Even us mere mortals who cook in their own kitchens, for their family and friends, can enjoy the simple delights of the expressions of satisfaction from those we cook for. Cooking is an equalizer of mankind, because even Kings and Queens eat. Poor and rich a like can get the same satisfaction from food. That's all from me. Over and out.
